About Our Leather

At Alta Andina, we use only full grain, vegetable tanned leather, dyed with natural aniline dyes. The vegetable tanning, dyeing, and finishing processes of our leather are all 100% natural.

The grain is the outermost protective layer of the hide where leather gets all its strength and durability. Scratches and blemishes from an animals life show up on the grain, as the grain is the outermost layer of the hide. High quality hides have fewer marks and blemishes to start. We start with only the finest selection of hides. By selecting premium hides with fewer blemishes, we don’t have to sand down the grain to produce a blemish free surface. Many companies start with cheap hides, full of marks and blemishes. In order to make these cheap hides useable, companies have to sand down the grain to create a blemish free surface. When these companies sand down the grain, they lose the strongest part of the leather. We use the best selection of hides, and are proud of the small imperfections. Those little imperfections are a sign of quality, and make each product one of a kind.

Our leather is tanned using a blend of naturally occurring tannins derived from quebracho and mimosa trees, both of which are native to the Andes. We use only 100% vegetable tanned leather. Our leather is safe for the environment, leatherworkers, and you. 90% of leather in the world is toxic chrome tanned leather. Chrome tanned leather pollutes the environment, and is toxic to the health of leatherworkers and consumers.

Our Miel, Café, Natural and Noche colors come from natural anilins. Once tanned, hides are placed back in the tumbler with natural aniline dyes so that the leather absorbs the color completely. After the color is absorbed, we finish our leather by applying a mixture of neatsfoot oil and beeswax. This natural coating makes our leather more water resistant, and deepens our rich colors. Our color won’t peel or fade over time. In contrast, chrome tanned leather is painted. The paint on chrome tanned leather will always eventually peel off. We never paint or spray any synthetic finishes on our leather.

Our full grain, vegetable tanned leather will patina beautifully. A patina is the natural darkening and softening of leather with time due to the exposure to oxygen, sunlight and the natural oils from your skin. A patina is one of the hallmarks of full grain, vegetable tanned leather.

Environmental Impact

The sights, flavors and experiences of travel create some of our most vivid memories. Unfortunately, most things we own around the house have traveled farther and wider than we could even dream. Leather products often bounce between the eastern and western hemisphere several times before they’re purchased. That travel means boats, planes, trains and automobiles – and the fuel, exhaust and pollution that accompany those forms of transportation.

Products within this global supply chain create 10.25 times more CO2 than sourcing and manufacturing everything within our local Andean supply chain. We reduce the carbon footprint of our products by 90% compared to the global norm – just from the reduction in transportation alone.
